CCC Announces 2023 Softball All-CCC Teams

SOFTBALL ALL-CCC HISTORY

BIDDEFORD, Maine – The Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) announced its 2023 Softball All-Conference Teams and major award winners Tuesday morning. All 10 CCC schools were represented on this year’s list with Endicott’s seven selections leading the way.

The Gulls also took home two of the major awards with Raven Comtois (Milford, N.H.) winning Player of the Year and her battery mate Jaylin Couto (Taunton, Mass.) being voted Pitcher of the Year. Wentworth also won a pair of major awards with Katie Kranz (Bedford, Mass.) winning the Defensive Player of the Year award and Alexandra Pina (Cumberland, R.I.) being named the CCC Scholar-Athlete. Nichols first-year Bailey Littlefield (Saco, Maine) was voted the Rookie of the Year. The Coach of the Year honor went to Salve Regina head coach Shauna Mulkerin and her team was awarded the Team Sportsmanship Award.

Voting for the All-CCC Teams and major awards was conducted by the 10 CCC head softball coaches following the conclusion of the regular season and do not take postseason play into consideration.

The full list of honorees is included below.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Raven Comtois, Endicott

Comtois was one of the premier power bats in the conference this year, batting .408/.456/.656 during the regular season. Aided by her eight regular-season home runs, she had the second-best slugging percentage in the conference. Her home run total also placed her second in the league and in the top-50 in all of NCAA Division III. The Gulls catcher also had 23 runs scored and 26 RBI during the season. After a tough spring training trip to start the year, Comtois was held hitless only once. She had 15 multi-hit games during the regular-season and was picked as CCC Player of the Week twice (weeks ending April 23 and April 30).

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Katie Kranz, Wentworth

Kranz patrolled the infield with a quick glove for Wentworth this year, helping them become of the better run-prevention team’s in the league this year. Playing first base provided a lot of opportunities for mistakes, but Kranz was up to nearly all of them. She made just three errors in 156 total chances for a .981 fielding percentage. Her performance got even better in conference play as she did not make a single error in 86 chances against CCC opponents.

PITCHER OF THE YEAR

Jaylin Couto, Endicott

Couto was dominant in the circle this year for Endicott, posting a 14-3 record in 17 appearances. Her 14 runs led the league as did her 1.12 ERA, which ranked her 12th in all of NCAA Division III. She threw 13 complete games and earned five shutouts. She also had 79 strikeouts this spring. Couto also had a CCC-best 0.85 WHIP, which ranked her just outside of the top-25 nationally in that category. The junior hurler was an innings-eater going deep into each of her starts. She allowed three or fewer hits on five occasions and had eight outings in which she did not allow an earned run. Her performance was recognized by the league twice, in the weeks ending March 19 and April 23.

ROOKIE OF THE YEAR

Bailey Littlefield, Nichols

Littlefield was a staple in the Nichols lineup from opening day. She played in and started all, but one of the Bison’s 40 regular-season contests. She led the Bison with 44 hits, batting .349/.373/.397 in her rookie campaign. She was also second on the team in RBI with 22, while also scoring 11 runs. When she wasn’t serving the DP for Nichols, she could be found behind the plate, playing stellar defense at catcher. She was recognized by the league as Rookie of the Week in the week ending April 23.

CCC SCHOLAR-ATHLETE

Alexandra Pina, Wentworth

Pina was a true student-athlete in her time at Wentworth, majoring in civil engineering and project management. She accumulated a 3.857 undergraduate GPA and a 3.958 graduate GPA to give her a combined cumulative of 3.9075 during her time at Wentworth. She completed her B.S. in civil engineering and is working on project management in graduate school. She is also working full  time as a project engineer at Commodore Builders. Aside for her school and sports work, Pina is also co-President of the Wentworth Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

COACH OF THE YEAR

Shauna Mulkerin, Salve Regina

Mulerkin earned her first-ever CCC Coach of the Year after leading Salve Regina to a 9-9 CCC (18-22 overall) in just her second season. The Salve Regina squad was the No. 5 seed in the CCC Championship Tournament. Offense was the story of the year for Salve Regina as Mulerkin’s squad led the league in scoring (200 total runs), total stolen bases (79), and hits (323). They also led the league in doubles with 60.
