Men's Soccer: Golden Bears Level Late, Hawks Advance to CNE Championship Match in PKs

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men's Soccer team secured it's fourth straight conference championships birth on Tuesday, advancing to the Conference of New England (CNE) Championship match after a 2-2 draw, and advanced 5-4 on penalty kicks over Western New England.

The Hawks out shot WNE 20-16, with nine shots on goal to the Golden Bears eight. WNE was held to one corner kick in the match, while the Hawks earned eight, but the Golden Bears had eight fouls called against, to RWU's 20. No cards were awarded in the match.

Both teams started hot early, with the Golden Bears striking after an initial shot by Nigel Martin was saved by Eliot Panaccione (Pepperell, Mass.) that was turned away, before Ben Riley came charging in from the far post. Riley then buried a shot into the back of the net, with a shot into the upper left corner of the net.

The Hawks responded a few minutes later, after a ball from Shay O'Neill found his shot saved by Panaccione. After letting his team settle up field, Panaccione sent a punt up field to over midfield, with the wind and bounced ahead to Dylan Thomas (Norwalk, Conn.) who then buried a shot into the lower left side of the net to level the score just under seven minutes later.

Just over four minutes later, the Hawks saw Thomas give them their first lead of the day after a ball traveled into the corner for Tyler Jastrab (Townsend, Mass.). Jastrab then back heel flipped a pass to Dylan Robbins (Johnston, R.I.) that Robbins two touched to move around his defender, before sending a shot that was saved by Braylon Casinghino. The rebound made its way to Thomas, that he then finished to give RWU the lead.

After finishing the half, and heading into the final 10 minutes, the Golden Bears dictated pace of play for most of the second half, taking two more shots in the half. The Golden Bears trailed until the 84:39 mark, when Jacob Dounetos finished his attempt to level the match with 5:21 remaining in the second half.

After a scoreless extra-time period, the Golden Bears led things off in the penalty shootout. After a save by Panaccione was called back, Tyler Lewis took advantage of his second opportunity and buried his attempt. The Hawks then sent out Brandon Rodriguez (Norwalk, Conn.) who did the same.

After both squads made their second and third attempts, Jack Leland missed on the Golden Bears fourth attempt, Patrick Marino (Wyckoff, N.J.) finished his penalty kick attempt to give RWU a 4-3 lead. Brennan Johnson leveled the match in WNE's fifth attempt, but Jorge Beltran (Madrid, Spain) sealed a perfect PK finish for the Hawks to seal the championship birth for the Hawks.

Roger Williams (13-1-5, 8-1-1 CNE) will host No. 2 Suffolk, who advanced with a 2-1 victory over No. 6 Endicott later in the evening, on Saturday, Nov. 8 for the CNE Championship at a time to be determined.
