BEVERLY, Mass. — The Conference of New England (CNE) is thrilled to announce Bill Gorman as its next Associate Commissioner. No stranger to the CNE, Gorman will join the conference office from Wentworth Institute of Technology where he’s enjoyed a three-decade run with the Leopards. He will officially start the role on March 30.
In this role, Gorman will have oversight of Conference sports administration and championship operations. He will also be charged with crafting recommendations to the athletic directors as they relate to the strategic vision of the league and implementing them accordingly, in conjunction with the Commissioner.
“We are extremely happy to welcome Bill to the conference staff,” said CNE Commissioner Julie Beer. “Bill’s experience on campus and his extensive knowledge of the CNE will help us continue to remain successful in our strategic vision. Bill has been a reliable leader among administrators around the league, and I have no doubt he will bring that same thorough and strategic approach to the position.”
Gorman joined the Wentworth Athletic Department as the school’s first full-time Director of Athletic Communications in October, 1995, and was promoted to Associate Director of Athletics in July, 2002. In September, 2017, he was promoted to the department's senior associate athletic director.
“Having worked at a CNE member institution for 30-plus years, I am excited to begin a new chapter on the other side of the conference structure,” said Gorman. “I would like to thank Julie Beer and the search committee for this tremendous opportunity, and I am looking forward to getting started. The CNE is an excellent conference, and I look forward to working with our outstanding administrators, coaches, and student-athletes to help continue in its growth into one of the top-tier conferences in Division III.”
As the Director of Athletic Communications, Gorman has been responsible for publicizing and promoting Wentworth's 19 NCAA Division III varsity sports and the student-athletes who compete on them. As the senior associate director in the department, he is a member of the department's senior management team and handles such administrative duties as serving as the University's NCAA Compliance Officer, overseeing the assistant director of athletic communications, and serving as sport supervisor for the baseball program. He also has a background in intercollegiate and facility scheduling, additional sport oversight, and assisting with financial operations. He has been a part of the hiring process as a search committee member for numerous coaches and staff members over the course of his tenure.
Since his arrival at Wentworth, Gorman has promoted numerous Academic All-District candidates, including the school's first three-time Academic All-America, who was the 2015 Academic All-America of the Year in softball. He has also promoted a plethora of all-conference and All-New England performers as well as a multitude of All-America selections, including assisting in the promotion of the 2024 AVCA Division III Men's Volleyball National Player of the Year. From 1998-2007 he served as a publicist for the Conference of New England (formerly the Commonwealth Coast Conference), compiling weekly reports in baseball and softball, and from 2009-2017, he served as the chair of the CNE Sports Information Directors and a liaison to the conference office.
In 2010 he helped advance the department technologically when wentworthathletics.com was launched after Gorman was instrumental in the design and creation of pages, having carried them over from the department's original website. Three years later he again worked with PrestoSports to undergo a more modern re-design and he assisted with redesigns in the spring of 2018 and fall of 2024. He also worked to bring the streaming of all home events under one umbrella in 2013, which set the stage for partnering with BlueFrame Technologies (now Hudl) in 2019.
Prior to arriving at Wentworth, Gorman spent a year at the University of Massachusetts Lowell as the Assistant Sports Information Director under College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Hall of Fame member B.L. Elfring. He was the primary contact for many of the River Hawks’ NCAA Division II teams while serving as the secondary contact for UML’s Division I men’s ice hockey program.
A 1994 graduate of Stonehill College with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication, Gorman served as the Associate Director of Sports Information during his final three and a half years as an undergraduate. He was the primary contact for the Chieftains' football, men's and women's basketball, baseball and softball teams and was the media liaison for the women's basketball team that advanced to its first-ever Division II Elite Eight in 1994.
A veteran of NCAA committees, Gorman was appointed to a four-year term on the Division III Baseball Committee in August, 2021, served as the acting chair during the 2024 tournament, and was the committee chair during the 2024-2025 academic year. He previously served as a member of the Men's and Women's Ice Hockey Rules Committee from 2008-12 and on the Division III Men's Golf Committee from 2014-19, chairing the committee from 2016-18. In 2021 he was a replacement committee member at the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championships. He also served on four ECAC Tournament selection committees (men’s soccer, women’s basketball, men’s volleyball, baseball) at varied times from 2002-16. From 2020-2023 he was the CNE's representative to the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Regional Advisory Committee and also serves as the sport liaison to the CNE's men's golf coaches as well as serving on the CNE Sport Management Committee and the CNE Baseball Tournament Committee.
Gorman has been active in the Eastern Athletic Communications Association (EAST-COMM; formerly known as ECAC-SIDA) since joining the organization in 1992. In addition to serving as both a panelist and a table topic moderator, he served a two-year stint on the membership committee (1997-99) and was a member of the local organizing committee during the 2000 and 2005 workshops, which were both held on Cape Cod. In 2001 he was named to the organization's executive board and served as its president during the 2008-09 school year, presiding over the 2009 Workshop in Avalon, N.J. He was honored with the organization’s prestigious Irving T. Marsh Award in 2014. In June of 2017 he began his second stint on the Executive Board when he was named to the Ex-Officio position. In 2019, he was honored by CoSIDA with a 25-year award.
In 2018 he earned his Master of Science degree in Sport Management from Southern New Hampshire University in 2018. Gorman resides in his native Winthrop, Mass., with his wife, Jennifer, and daughters Hannah and Ella.
