BRISTOL, R.I. — Abigail Stevens' (Brewster, Mass.) overtime goal lifted Roger Williams University to a 2-1 victory over the University of New England in the Conference of New England (CNE) Field Hockey Championship on Saturday at Bayside Field.
The win marks the first conference championship in program history, in the Hawks' second attempt, after falling short in last season's match.
The Hawks outshot the Nor'easters 15-3, with UNE putting all three of their attempts on cage. The Hawks had seven shots on goal in the match, while holding an 11-7 advantage in penalty corner attempts.
Dawn DeWeese-Moss made four saves in the match, with Jill Haudenshield (Sykesville, Md.) picking up the win with a lone save.
The scoring opened in the second period when Maddy Monahan (Bristol, N.H.) put Roger Williams on the board at the 16:15 mark, with an assist from Hannah Timbrouck (Kingston, N.Y.). UNE's Shelly Tremblay responded quickly, netting the equalizer just three minutes later off a setup from Francesca Caccamo.
With 2:54 left in the extra period, Stevens scored off an assist from Chelsea King (Schenectady, N.Y.) to secure the Hawks' first-ever conference title. Stevens' goal capped off a tense match that saw both teams locked in a 1-1 stalemate throughout regulation.
Roger Williams (16-6, 4-1 CNE) will await the location of the program's first NCAA Tournament appearance on Sunday, Nov. 10 at 9:30 pm during the NCAA Division III Selection Show.
